Londra, UK: nei paesi occidentali, come il Regno Unito, si stima che quasi un bambino ogni tre è a oggi sovrappeso o obeso. Allo stesso tempo, un numero crescente di bambini sta ricevendo cure ortodontiche per correggere le malocclusioni già in tenera età. Un nuovo studio condotto dai ricercatori del King’s College London Dental Institute e pubblicato su Journal of Dental Research ha recentemente svelato che la risposta a questo particolare tipo di trattamento può significativamente variare a seconda del peso corporeo del bambino.

Nello studio di coorte, i ricercatori hanno seguito un certo numero di pazienti in età adolescenziale, che sono stati classificati di peso normale o obesi on base al loro indice di massa corporea, dall’inizio del trattamento al completamento dell’allineamento dei denti. Durante gli esami, è emerso che i pazienti che obesi avevano un significativo aumento del tasso di movimento dei denti iniziale e che occorreva meno tempo per ottenere l’allineamento dei denti rispetto ai pazienti normopeso.

I ricercatori hanno anche notato un aumento dei livelli di biomarker d’infiammazione nel tessuto gengivale nei pazienti obesi prima di un trattamento ortodontico.
Primo del suo genere, questo studio sulla relazione tra obesità e il movimento ortodontico dimostra che la condizione di peso dei pazienti adolescenti influenza il tessuto di sostegno intorno al dente, e questo potrebbe avere importanti implicazioni, hanno detto i ricercatori, per l’esito del trattamento ortodontico nei pazienti obesi sia a breve che a lungo termine.

I livelli di obesità sono aumentati in modo significativo in tutti i gruppi di età nelle società occidentali negli ultimi due decenni, ed è stato legato a molteplici malattie croniche, tra cui l’infiammazione parodontale. In una valutazione del 2015/2016, la sanità pubblica in Inghilterra ha scoperto che il 14% di un milione di studenti in Gran Bretagna è stati classificati come sovrappeso e quasi il 20% come obeso.
